Did you know that the world consumes 80 billion pieces of clothing every year? That’s 400% more than just 20 years ago! The documentary “The True Cost” reveals the environmental and human impact of this trend, offering a powerful wake-up call to all fashion lovers.

The Birth of Fast Fashion

Fast fashion encourages us to constantly refresh our wardrobes with cheap, trendy items that last just a few wears. It’s all about getting that $10 t-shirt, wearing it a few times, and then tossing it aside. This cycle of consumption fuels a massive increase in textile waste—Americans alone generate about 82 pounds of textile waste per person each year.

The Human Cost of Fast Fashion

Beyond the environmental impact, fast fashion has a dire human cost. Decades ago, 95% of clothing sold in the US was made domestically. Today, it’s only 3%. Why? Because production has moved overseas to countries where labor is cheap and regulations are lax. Many of the people making our clothes are underpaid women and girls working in unsafe conditions, at constant risk of workplace accidents and illnesses.

The tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh in 2013 is a stark reminder of this reality. Over 1,000 workers lost their lives and more than 2,500 were injured when the eight-story building, housing garment factories, collapsed. Why did it happen? To maximize production at the lowest cost, corners were cut, and safety was ignored. This disaster revealed the hidden human cost behind those low price tags.

The Environmental Cost of Fast Fashion

Fashion isn’t just hard on people—it’s also the second most polluting industry globally. For example, cotton, which makes up about half of all textiles, requires vast amounts of water and pesticides. These chemicals not only harm the land and local communities but also remain in the fibers we wear. Leather production also has a huge environmental footprint due to the resources needed to raise livestock and the toxic chemicals used in tanning. To learn more about the impact of fashion on our planet, watch the documentary “The True Cost,” which reveals the environmental and social consequences of our clothing choices.
